How Women Entrepreneurs Overcome Fear of Success & Wealth

How Women Entrepreneurs Overcome Fear of Success & Wealth - Chris James
I was watching Atlanta with my husband when a quote stopped me: “Become what you fear.”

What if the thing you’re avoiding is exactly what you need to become?
What if your fear of being “too successful” is the very thing keeping you from the impact you want to make?
What if your fear of wealth is actually keeping you from being the generous, creative, Godly woman you’re meant to be?

The Root Causes of Women Entrepreneurs’ Fear of Business Success

Here’s what I’ve learned: Most of us have been programmed to believe that being poor equals humility. That wanting money makes you greedy. Many think, “I just want to make an impact, it’s not about the money.”

All lies.

You know what’s actually humble? Being wealthy enough to be a giver. Being successful enough to create jobs. Being profitable enough to support your family and your community.

Creating a business is one of the most Godly things woman entrepreneurs can do because you’re literally creating. You’re bringing something new into existence.

But somewhere along the way, we got convinced that success meant becoming cold, calculating, like some stereotype of a white dude with crossed arms running a boardroom.

We started believing we had to choose: Be a great mother, wife, and daughter OR be successful in business.
The truth is, you can be both. You’re supposed to be both.

How Fear of Wealth Sabotages Women Entrepreneurs’ Business Impact

I did plus size modeling years ago.

The first time the I felt in prayer, to take up the net modeling opportunity, I said yes to myself, but when I mentioned it at work, someone literally fired off a laugh and said “stay focused on work.”

However, when the time came, I was asked to model again after that comment. And you know what? I did it anyway.
I did shows. I was in magazines. I had pictures in local salons.

But then I lost weight, and suddenly it was “Who are you trying to look good for?” and “Oh, you are too good to eat this now?”
You know what I did? I got uncomfortable with their discomfort. I made myself small again to make them comfortable. I gained the weight back.

Here’s the weird part: I was taking up more physical space (gaining weight) but trying to hide and shrink more at the same time. It didn’t make sense, but that’s what fear does – it makes you contradict yourself.

Practical Steps to Overcome Fear of Making Money

Here’s what happens when you let other people’s comments become your philosophy:
That one sentence – “stay in your lane” – becomes a life sentence.
You build your whole life around keeping other people comfortable with your smallness.
You tell yourself lies like “I just want to make an impact, it’s not about the money”. When really, you’re scared of what people will think if you actually succeed.
But here’s what I know for sure: Those women who say “it’s not about the money” will stay stuck until they get honest with themselves.

You can’t make the impact you want without the resources to back it up.
You can’t serve at the level you’re called to while worried about paying bills.
You can’t create the change you want while playing small to make others comfortable.

Life After You Stop Playing Small

I’m currently in the process of becoming what I fear most: a wealthy, healthy woman who belongs in rooms with other 7-figure business owners.
A woman who’s allowed to be there.
A woman who’s not “doing too much.”
This is my current journey – taking up more physical space because I’m claiming my place in the spaces I want to be in.
And you know what? It’s terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.
Because when you become what you fear, you realize the fear had more power over you than the actual thing ever could.

Why Do Successful Women Feel Guilty About Money?

Some of those comments from years ago went in one ear and out the other. But some stuck. They became anchors that kept me small.

“Who are you trying to be?” “Stay in your lane.” “You’re getting too big for your britches.”
But true liberation? It comes from becoming exactly what you fear.
Because when you become it, you realize it was never as scary as you thought.

You realize you can be a wealthy AND humble entrepreneur. Successful AND kind. Profitable AND generous.
You can run a business AND a household. Lead a team AND love your family. Make money AND make an impact.

The fear only has power when you’re running from it.

How to Start Becoming What You Fear

Just reading this won’t lift the weight. You have to go from fear to anticipation to actually becoming the thing.
You have to decide that you’re worthy of the success you want.
You have to stop making yourself small to make others comfortable.
You have to start taking up the space you’re meant to occupy.
Whether that’s physical space, financial space, or the space you take up in your industry.
The world needs more women entrepreneurs who aren’t afraid of their own success.
The world needs more women who understand that wealth and generosity go hand in hand.
The world needs more female founders who refuse to play small.

Are you ready to stop letting other people’s limitations become your life sentence?
